As part of their social value pledge, Equans delivered first aid and health and safety courses to residents on the Aylesbury estate.
The courses were put on for free to help residents build up skills that could help them in their careers. Eight people took part in each of the courses, level 3 Emergency first aid at work and level 1 health and safety in a construction environment.
By passing the health and safety assessment they received a voucher to take the CITB health and safety test for free and get their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. Most principal contractors and major house builders require workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card.
The courses were delivered to encourage more local residents to take up job roles and apprenticeships in the construction industry with our construction partner Hill and completing the courses will boost their chances of getting jobs in construction.
On the courses residents had the following feedback:
Sylvester Kanu, who did both training sessions, said:
“The health and safety training was a well delivered, covering workplace hazards, safety protocols, emergency procedures and other topics. There were hands-on demonstrations which enhanced my understanding. Overall, it was time well spent which now ensures mine and co-workers' wellbeing as well as compliance with regulation on construction sites I work.”
Another resident who did the health safety training, Oyindamola Kupolokun, said:
“What a fantastic experience and I’m glad to say I passed and so did everyone else who took the course. We were warmly welcomed and enjoyed brilliant training, with great hospitality provided. I want to say a big thank you to Equans and Notting Hill Genesis for teaching this course, it is brilliant.”
